Addressing Poverty In The Republic of Yemen

The poverty rate in Yemen is extremely troubling with 34.8% of the population living under the national poverty line. This is why 30% of the loan ($74,399,640) will be dedicated to lifting more Yemenis out of poverty and propel them into the developing middle class. More families rising out of poverty also means that more money will be available to provide food for their family, along with better healthcare and more children will be able to attend school. Although this funding will directly impact goal #1 of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, it will also indirectly put Yemen on the path to achieving goals 2, 4, 5 and 6. This is because with less families living in poverty, they will be able to provide better healthcare that correlates with increased income. In order address poverty in Yemen, we will be partnering with two Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that are currently working on this issue in Yemen. Fifty percent (50%) of the $74,399,640 will be given to the Yemen Micro-finance Network to help them with their mission of providing small heavily subsidized loans to the people of Yemen so they can expand and start their own small businesses. The remaining 50% will go to the Food and Agriculture Organization to aid in its goal of "raise levels of nutrition and standards of living, to improve agricultural productivity, and to better the condition of rural populations." This organization will teach Yemeni farmers modern farming practices that will yield greater productivity and crops. In turn, this means that the population will have more local food instead of depending on imports, thus decreasing hunger and low nutritional levels.
