Target 2.A: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.

Globally, more children are enrolling in primary school education with an 8% increase in enrollment between 1999 and 2010. The overall education situation in Yemen is very dismal with 62.4% of all persons aged 15 and above being illiterate. Moreover, students received 2.5 years of schooling on average. The government of Yemen has recognized this disparity in education and currently spends 5.2% of GDP on education. The target goal of this Millenium Development Goal is to ensure that by 2015, children will be able to fully complete primary schooling. Although 91% of Yemeni children now complete primary school, the quality of their education is still relatively low. There are still major challenges that need to be addressed in order for the qualitative factors to improve. Schools in Yemen are poorly equipped and suffer from mass overcrowding, improper distribution of teachers, and below quality school curricula. In addition, a negative attitude towards the education of girls still persist. The government has adopted far reaching measures to tackle these problems and have vowed to increase education funding. It is likely that Yemen will achieve the universal primary education goal by 2015 if current trends persist since 91% of children are already enrolled. All that is left to be done is to work on getting the remaining 9% of children into the primary school education system. Although Yemen will likely achieve this quantitative goal by 2015, it will need to work on improving the quality of education for its children.
