A history of economic depression in Yemen has had a detrimental impact on the quality of life for the people of Yemen with approximately 34.8% of the population living under the national poverty line. This figure is an improvement from 40.1% in the year 1998. In relation to Target 1.A, an estimated 17.5% of Yemeni’s live on less than $1.25 per day. This information shows that there is a severe need for investment in this sector to improve the situation. It is also important to note that these statistics are above the regional average. Target 1.B regarding full and productive employment needs a lot of work on this front since Yemen’s unemployment rate currently hovers around 50%. Of this current percentage, 11.5% are male while 40.9% female. A recent news story in the newspaper National Yemen stated that 73.3% of youth in Yemen are jobless and the government's lackadaisical efforts are not addressing the problem. The National Yemen stated, “Many Yemeni and international analysts, experts, and economists attribute part of the rise of Yemeni militant groups to economic hardships and the soaring unemployment rate, especially among the youth.” This situation is also closely related to the the terrorism activities in the country. The unemployment rate witnessed a spike in 2011 following anti government protests. The final target goal of  halving the number of people suffering from hunger seems out of reach by 2015. The World Food Programme in 2012 concluded that about 10 million Yemenis, approximately half of the population, is food insecure. In addition, 22% of the population is suffering from undernourishment. Given the above information, I have concluded that it is extremely unlikely that Yemen will achieve Goal #1 of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. The government has not budgeted enough money for this goal and in the global financial crisis has impacted the income of the people. In addition, the population is growing at an alarming rate and the per capita income level remain stagnant.
